FAQ

Floating Shelves

Floating shelves are typically installed on an open area, meaning they are attached to the wall at the back only. Alcove shelves install between walls or cabinets and are usually attached at the back and the sides. Alcove shelves can be made (deeper) because they are also supported on both sides.

I will custom build any reasonable one piece size floating shelves, however there are limits. Extra long shelves are built as two separate shelves that can be installed inline to make up the length ordered. They can also be used as stand alone shelves should you decide to use them elsewhere or place them on different levels on the same wall. They are also much less expensive to ship. Please contact me for more information.

Open wall floating shelves can have a projection of up to 12″ wide, however they must be a minimum of 2″ thick to accommodate a more robust mounting system. Alcove type shelves can be wider and thinner because they are attached on the sides as well as the back.

I build a mounting bar with stand-offs to give support to the entire length and width of the shelves. It’s easy to mount on the wall and it’s very strong.  Please click here for a picture of the mounting system and a brief explanation. (see below the pricing tables)

Fabrication

The most common species are red oak, white oak, pine, walnut and maple. For shelves that are to be painted, I use paint grade maple. Please contact me if you would like something other than what is listed here.

I use only top quality veneer core plywood.  It stays flat, is very stable and is also lightweight.

As of Jan. 25, 2024 I am working on the order for Keith P. Next: Ali B. Then: Bailey S.

Depending on the situation, I will work on more than 1 order at a time. This saves set-up time and speeds up completion, so please check back here often for the status of your order. Any dates are my best estimation.
