Floating shelves are typically installed on a flat area of wall; they are attached to the wall at the back only. Alcove shelves are installed between walls or cabinets or in corners, and are typically attached on multiple sides. Alcove shelves can be made deeper because they are more thoroughly supported.
The wood that CMC uses to build floating shelves is 96″ long; as such, this is the longest length that we can build as a single solid shelf. Longer shelves can be built as two separate pieces that can be installed in perfect alignment to create the appearance of one long shelf.
Open wall floating shelves can be up to 12″ deep; they must be a minimum of 2″ thick to accommodate a robust mounting system. Alcove shelves can be deeper and thinner because they are attached on the sides as well as the back.
Each CMC shelf comes with a mounting bar with stand-offs to give support to the entire length and width. It is easy to mount on the wall and is very strong. Please click here for a picture of the mounting system and a brief explanation; we email every customer installation instructions which are easy to follow.
We offer shelving in red oak, white oak, pine, walnut, and maple. For shelves that are to be painted, CMC uses paint grade maple. If you have another species of wood in mind, let us know; we are happy to discuss custom options.
CMC uses only top quality veneer core plywood. It stays flat and is very stable, lightweight, and strong.
